Why Listen to Me?

​

I first picked up a guitar back in 1992. After playing in a number of bands and a few residencies, I left my hometown of Norwich, UK, and began busking on the streets of London. From there, the real education started: hustling gigs, learning to survive, and navigating the music industry from the ground up. I spent much of my 20s homeless, but music was always the constant that kept me moving forward.

Since turning professional in 2004, I’ve built a career that has taken me through almost every corner of this industry. Today, I’m a course creator, brand influencer, educator, teacher, band leader, author, and mentor. At 47, I’m still here, still relevant, and still reinventing what it means to be a working musician — supporting my family and thriving in a constantly changing industry.

I don’t come at this with textbook theories or university lectures. Everything I share comes from lived experience — the same struggles, doubts, and challenges you may be facing. I know what it’s like to feel stuck, to question yourself, and to push through fear.

One of my proudest moments was overcoming stage nerves and performing at Manchester Academy. As someone who has always struggled with anxiety — and who is autistic — that was a huge personal victory. It proved that growth is possible, even when fear feels overwhelming.

Along the way, I’ve had the honour of the late, great John Mayall telling me I sounded like Peter Green on guitar whilst busking , my band being recommended by Chas Hodges and I’ve been continually lifted and inspired by the incredible support of my Real Home Studio YouTube community. I also mentor musicians for the UK charity Help Musicians, something I’m deeply proud of.

But probably my biggest achievement is simply still being here — relevant, adaptable, and evolving. To keep pivoting, changing, and reinventing myself as a musician for a living, while supporting my family in this industry, is the success I value most.
