Ok, how many times have you heard that!? Maybe with the latest plugin, piece of equipment or youtube video. I know, it gets tiring. And, it gets frustrating.
I think that the truth is that we'd all secretly love to uncover the solution in a piece of gear or plugin but all harbour the challenging truth that it's going to take time, a whole lot of patience and time. Just like Harrison told us back in the 80's.
So, back on topic, what is the secret sauce to a good mix? Well, if you really want to get ahead, then spending time on arrangement and pre production will supercharge your mixes like no piece of gear or plugin out there.
It's a hard pill to swallow for sure. I get that. In fact I really get that. I was given this advice when I was 26 and I continued to believe that the answer was in the microphone until I spent time with a Neumann U87 and realised, in my mid 30's that I'd got a lot wrong in my approach. Jeez, and now I'm in my mid forties!
So here's the deal. When you have a good song, plan it out. Arrange it. Tweak it. Do your pre production and have a plan. Your mix will love you for it.
